Our take on the 2 India launches. Good Investment or Expensive Toys? Let’s find out -

Xperia Z vs BB Z10

Sony Xperia Z vs BlackBerry Z10

1. Operating System

Both phones are Flagship devices, meaning the best that a company has to offer. These are both Top-of-the-Line, High-End devices running the latest Mobile Operating System –  Sony Xperia Z with Android JellyBean OS in one corner and the BlackBerry Z10 with BlackBerry 10 OS in the other corner. We first look at what features does the OS bring into each of these devices. It’s very important that we compare this first, moving onto subsequent comparisions.

Android JB vs BB10

 Blackberry 10

  • BlackBerry Hub: which is a single place to manage all your conversations whether personal or work email, BBM messages, social media updates or notifications, and the ability to “peek” into the BlackBerry Hub from anywhere, so you’re always only one swipe away from what matters to you.
  • BlackBerry Flow: where the BlackBerry 10 experience excels by enabling features and apps to flow seamlessly together, helping you complete the task at hand effortlessly and efficiently
  • BBM (BlackBerry Messenger): which allows you to share things with the people that matter to you in an instant.
  • BlackBerry Balance technology: which elegantly separates and secures work applications and data from personal content on BlackBerry devices.
  • ‘Active Frames’ Homscreen
  • Gesture to exit applications

Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

  • Re-sizable app widgets: Android 4.1 introduces improved App Widgets that can automatically resize, based on where the user drops them on the home screen, the size to which the user expands them, and the amount of room available on the home screen.
  • Network Bandwidth Management: Android 4.1 helps apps manage data usage appropriately when the device is connected to a metered network, including tethering to a mobile hotspot. Apps can query whether the current network is metered before beginning a large download that might otherwise be relatively expensive to the user.
  • Android Beam: Android Beam is a popular NFC-based technology that lets users instantly share, just by touching two NFC-enabled phones together. In Android 4.1, Android Beam makes it easier to share images, videos, or other payloads by leveraging Bluetooth for the data transfer. When the user triggers a transfer, Android Beam hands over from NFC to Bluetooth, making it really easy to manage the transfer of a file from one device to another.
  • Google Play Store: 700,000 Apps available for download.
  • Google Play Books: E-book Store.
  • Smart App Updates: Smart app updates is a new feature of Google Play that introduces a better way of delivering app updates to devices. When developers publish an update, Google Play now delivers only the bits that have changed to devices, rather than the entire APK. This makes the updates much lighter-weight in most cases, so they are faster to download, save the device’s battery, and conserve bandwidth usage on users’ mobile data plan. On average, a smart app update is about 1/3 the sizeof a full APK update.

  • Upgradable to Android 4.2.
  • Vsync for apps: Extending vsync across the Android framework leads to a more consistent framerate and a smooth, steady UI. So that apps also benefit, Android 4.1 extends vsync timing to all drawing and animations initiated by apps. This lets them optimize operations on the UI thread and provides a stable timebase for synchronization.

There’s not an iota of doubt here, BB 10 lacks the number of apps, the experience and cannot compete in a race which it tried to enter late. Xperia Z with Android 4.1.2 wins here.

 2. Design

 Sony Xperia Z

Sony Xperia Z Design

The very first thing one looks for in a flagship device is whether the design for the money to be spent on, the kinda cash ones going to drop on it just to make him/her stand apart from the crowd. The Xperia Z wins this one hands down. WHY you ask? Here’s why  -

The Xperia Z was dressed to kill no matter which angle you look it up from. Sony believe they have combined the perfect blend of style and elegance and that they have come up with a revolutionary design with this balance – so much so, that they have a name for it –OmniBalance Design. We first thought this was all an over-the-top way of selling the phone, a gimmick, if you may, but when we saw the phone’s launch during CES 2013, we were mesmerized by its beauty!

The slim 7.9 mm body has a reflective glass surface and looks and feels slick. The glass on the back is as tough as the one on the front so you needn’t worry about breaking it. Xperia Z’s frame is made from glass fibre polyamide, the same material used in cars.

BlackBerry Z10

 z10 Design

The Z10 looks fresh……ish. It tries to go different but fails to. Its back does have that texture to differentiate it from most phones, but the camera is placed such to make it look like the Chinese iPhone substitute being sold 10x cheaper than the iPhone….which it’s not. Front still brings something back in the game with that no edge classy glassy look with plastic strips at top and bottom. That’s the most boring candy-bar designs I have seen in a while. Maybe because it’s bb’s First attempt at such a phone and hence they can be excused. It lacks the premium looks.

4. Unique Features

 BlackBerry z10

  • TimeShift: Have the camera in Time Shift mode. Snap a photo. And from there you move through the time scale. You can also tap to zoom in on a region to make a specific change there.
  • Storymaker:  It enables BlackBerry users to create seemingly professional movies in just a few simple steps.
  • BlackBerry Flow
  • BlackBerry Hub
  • BlackBerry Balance: Technology that enables BlackBerry smartphones and tablets to be used for business and personal purposes without compromise, with separate accounts for each.
  • BBM
  • BlackBerry Security: BlackBerry smartphone users can increase the security of their email messages and help protect the data stored on their smartphones, including files on the media card, thanks to BlackBerry’s Centralised Security and Encryption server.

Sony Xperia Z

xperia z dust resistant design
  • Dust Resistant
  • Water Resistant upto 30 min upto 3 feet
  • Battery stamina mode: saves you wasted battery drain by recognising when your display is off and turning off functions you don’t need, while keeping the notifications you want. As soon as you touch the screen and wake up your phone, everything is up and running again.
  • NFC to TV Mirroring : enables a user to stream whatever he’s streaming on his phone right to a Sony TV with NFC capabilities with just a touch.
  • HDR Video Recording : Better in low light conditions and better for backlight videos facing the sun
  • One-Touch Backup, Smart Connect and Connect And Drive.

This one is a tie, each phone has enough unique features to convince the consumer to buy the phone. It actually depends on what you want in a phone. Xperia Z tending to be more rugged and durable and BlackBerry10 having more Corporate Connectivity.

5. Price

FINALLY, we arrive at the price tag! Well you have seen what each phone can do and now it’s time to tell you the price in INR.

BlackBerry Z10 : INR 43,490.

Xperia Z: INR 38990.

SO who wins?!

The Verdict

Expensive Toy- BlackBerry Z10

Good Investment : Xperia Z

The Xperia Z won this comparision not just because of the price tag, but the many things BlackBerry Z10 hasnt come up with to defend their hefty price tag. Point also to be noted here that these are Premium Phones and that XPeria Z ‘s price too is a tad bit high considering you arent getting Android 4.2!
